Mary Jane was the daughter of Samuel R. and Mary (Barton) Jones who were early settlers of Black Township, Posey County, Indiana. She was born on the family farm on May 19, 1844. It was in 1865 that she married John M. Brown in Posey County. John was born in Posey County in December 13, 1842 and was part of a large Brown contingent who emigrated to Indiana about the same time as the Joneses. Shortly after the couple married, they moved to Carmi Precinct, White County, Illinois and established a farm near Mary Jane's parents who had also recently relocated there. By 1870 John was twenty-seven, Mary Jane was twenty-six and two children were living at home: William Oscar (age 4, called "Oscar" and born in Indiana) and Matilda (age 2 and born in Illinois). His farm was valued at $1,600. By 1880 John had moved his family again, this time establishing a farm in the Burnt Prairie Township, White County. John was now thirty-seven, Mary Jane was thirty-five, and three children were living at home: William Oscar (14), Mary Matilda "Tillie" (12) and Samuel R. (9 and born in October 1871). All three children were attending school. By 1900 the family was still on the Burnt Prairie farm. John was fifty-seven, Mary Jane was fifty-six and they had been married thirty-five years. Mary Jane reported in the U S Census that she had had six children, three were still living. A daughter Dora G., (age 19 and single) who had been born in March of 1881, was living at home. One source mentions a son Clarence by name. It would appear that they had one other child not reported in any census. Mary Jane passed away on March 23, 1907 and is buried in the Downen Cemetery (also called Shipley), Burnt Prairie, White County, Illinois. The cemetery is located between the towns of Carmi and Enfield. Her husband John died on December 6, 1924 and is buried at the side of his wife.
