Birth: Dec. 18, 1836
Randolph County
Missouri, USA
Death: Oct. 11, 1912
Macon County
Missouri, USA

Mary Jane (Rose) Owings was the daughter of Howell Seymour Rose (1808-1846) and Mary (Durham) Rose (1806-1884), both of whom were born in North Carolina, married there in 1829, and came to Missouri between 1830 and 1832. They first settled in Howard County, Missouri, and later in Macon and Randolph Counties.

Mary Jane had the following known siblings:

Archibald John Rose 1830-1903
Martha Rose 1832-1859
William Rose 1834-
Anderson Syemour Rose 1839-1932
Elizabeth Rose 1842-1886
George H. Rose 1846-

In the 1840 census, the Howell Rose family were listed as living in Liberty Township of Macon County, Missouri. On June 22, 1846, Mary Jane's father, Howell Rose, died at the age of about 38. The family was living in Randolph County, Missouri at this time. Howell was buried at Eldad Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery in Randolph County.

On July 4, 1847, Mary Jane's mother, Mary (Durham) Rose, remarried to Jacob Loe in Macon County, Missouri. After this, for unknown reasons, it does not appear that Mary Jane's mother took care of her children. In the 1850 census, the four youngest Rose children are found living with a family named Griffin in District 52 of Macon County, Missouri, rather than with their mother. Mary Jane's older sister Martha Rose, at the age of 16 in 1849, married William R. King in Macon County. So, in the 1850 census, Martha was living in her own home. It is unknown where Mary Jane was living in 1850 as she cannot be found in census records; however, it is possible she was living in another county with relatives.

On December 23, 1855, at the age of 19, Mary Jane married Waller Chenault Owings in Macon County, Missouri. They had two known children:

William J. Owings 1868-
Alice S. Owings 1871-

Mary Jane died in 1912 and Waller in 1914. Both are buried at Chariton Church Cemetery.
