Mrs. J. L. Shoemaker, 73, of 402 Madison Street, Moberly, and a resident of Shelbina for 17 years, died at 6 p.m. Monday, February 12, at a Moberly hospital. For some time she had suffered a heart condition and complications arose after she broke her are Saturday.
Mrs. Shoemaker, the former Florence Jeffrey, was born Nov. 11, 1888, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Jeffrey. On Oct. 9, 1907 she was married to J. L. Shoemaker and the following August he was ordained to the Christian ministry. Rev. and Mrs. Shoemaker have served churches in Lentner, Oak Ridge, Lakenan, Berea, Cherry Box, Hagers Grove and Shelbina, before he retired and they moved to Moberly. The Shelbina Church, which they served 17 years, was Rev. Shoemaker's last regular charge. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1957. One daughter preceded Mrs. Shoemaker in death.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother, Mrs. J. H. Jeffrey of Bynumville; three daughters, Daphne Dingle of Quincy, LuVerna Brown of Kansas City and Elizabeth VanWinkle, who with her husband recently returned from Paris, France, where he served in the U.S. Embassy. They now are in Kansas. Other survivors include two sons, Byron of near Mexico and Wilford of Champaign, Ill., a number of grandchildren, a brother and two sisters.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 in the Cater Funeral Home at Moberly. Burial was in Rice cemetery, south of New Cambria.
