@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Michael Disfarmer was
a portrait photographer.
He practiced his camera
work for 40 years.
He dwelled in Heber Springs,
Arkansas.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

He was born: 'Michael Meyer'.
The man chose to change his name.
Since 'meier' is a German term
meaning "dairy farmer" -- it was
thought he shunned this title.
'Disfarmer' signified his rejection
of a farmer's life and style.

Disfarmer lived an odd life, shunning
neighbors and only interacting
when he was dealing with clients
at his photography studio.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Disfarmer never married.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Disfarmer's studio style was simple.
His settings were mostly simple dark
or light colored cloth backdrops.
His subjects rarely smiled or interacted.
They show a natural, sometimes solemn
expression and never seem to have been
urged otherwise by the photographer.

Many of his photographs have been
compared to the famed FSA pictures
taken by some of the greatest, most
renoun photographers of the
mid-20th Century!

The result of Disfarmer's work is
a group of outstanding photographs
of ordinary rural people. He captured
the essence of an era in small town
America.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Disfarmer died in his studio in 1959.
Neighbors found him on the floor of
his studio, surrounded by his camera
materials, empty cans of Spam and the
refuse of a loner...

His neighbors buried him. A tombstone
was donated to mark his grave.

The recognition of his wonderful
photographs came AFTER his demise.
This is not a 'bad situation' as
he seemed to have shunned the
spotlight all his life...
