Royal James Singleton, III of Richmond, Virginia passed away on Monday, November 29, 2004. Born in Richmond, he was the son of the late Royal J. Singleton, II and Mary Armistead Singleton. A graduate of Virginia State University, Roy retired from the Richmond Public Schools Department of Music. In addition to his 47 years as a music educator throughout the State of Virginia, he also devoted over 20 years as a Professional Oboist, with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra; The Petersburg Symphony Orchestra; The Richmond Philharmonic; The Fairfax Symphony; The Baroque Ensemble; The Virginia Museum Orchestra; and The United States Second Army Band, including performances on the Ed Sullivan Show. His performances may also be heard on numerous musical recordings.

HIS PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS INCLUDE: The Musicians Association, Local 123; Music Educators National Conference; Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association; and The Richmond Instrumental Music Educators Association. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and recently received a 25 year commemorative plaque for service from the Petersburg Symphony.

HE IS SURVIVED BY: his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Essie Jenkins Singleton; the daughter he loved and in whom he had great pride Roslyn Rene' Singleton; the son he loved and adored Eric James Singleton; and the light of his life, his three grandchildren, Kalah, Erin and Maya Singleton; one sister, who will be totally lost without him, Etna Green-Carr; and three nieces who loved and adored him, Moki Terrill, Imani Green-Carr, and Isis Rae Terrill; and a host of other nieces and nephews including, Velma Tillar and Jennifer Copeland.
