US Marine Cpl Vinson Byrd, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Orrum, NC.

US Marine Corporal Vinson Byrd was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Marine Corps Selective Service and a Draftee, CPL Byrd served our country until July 6th, 1967 in Quang Tri, South Vietnam. He was 22 years old and was not married. It was reported that Vinson died from an undetermined explosion. His body was recovered. CPL Byrd is on panel 23E, line 017 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.

Dong Ha, Vietnam: Marine Lance Corporal Vinson Byrd, ward of Mrs Edna S. Hill of Route 1, Orrum, NC. Is on the edge of the Demilitarized Zone near Dong Ha, Vietnam, safeguarding a strategic bridge and vital supply route for American forces in that area, while serving with Foxtrot Company, Second Battalion, Third Marine Infantry Regiment. The Third Regiment is part of the Third Marine Division, with division headquarters in Phu Bai, Vietnam. His company takes part in search and destroy missions and routine patrols in and around the mountainous area near his battalion command post. The battalion is credited with serving in many operations, most of which were conducted in the Dong Lam Mountains of Da Nang.

Marine Corporal Vinson Byrd is the ward of Mrs Edna Hill of Orrum; both is parents are deceased. He went to Proctorville High School in Proctorville, NC and graduated in 1963. He entered service in November 1965, served at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1965 until September when he was sent to Vietnam. He died July 6 of a land mine explosion. The body will be sent here for burial and funeral plans will be announced.

He was the Son of the late Mr John McKoy and the late Mrs Ellen Byrd. Mrs Edna S Hill was his Guardian, Route 1, Box 226, Orrum, NC 28369, Mrs Anthony F Byrd, C/O Mr and Mrs Donell Campbell, Route 3, Lumberton 28369. Brother to Miss Debra L Byrd, C/O Sylvester Campbell, Route 1, Orrum 28369.

He served with Foxtrot Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd MAF.

He was awarded The Combat Action Ribbon(CAR), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
