Marguerite James Hanshaw
(March 9, 1922 - August 28, 2008)

Mrs. Marguerite James Hanshaw was born March 19, 1922 . The Gracious Lord called her home Thursday, August 28, 2008 . She was preceded in death by her parents Lois (Alex) Ladnier and Johnny James.

Mrs. Hanshaw was born, raised, and spent her life in Pascagoula , MS. She attended the Pascagoula Negro High School. During her lifetime she worked many varied jobs to earn a living for her family. She retired from Sears Roebuck in 1982. Hired initially as a maid, she went on to become the first black sales associate and division manager for the Pascagoula Sears store.

Mrs. Hanshaw was called to Christ at an early age. She was a life-long member of the Union Baptist Church in Pascagoula, and a faithful member of the Senior Choir. She loved and supported her church until family demands and her own failing health took its toll.

Marguerite was a loving and devoted mother and role model. Although limited to a tenth grade education by the segregated school system of her day, she aided and inspired all five of her children to attend and graduate from college.

Mrs. Hanshaw served for many years as the secretary for the local Christians Benevolent Association. She was Past President of the American Legion Post 243 Auxiliary and served as Southern District President of the American Legion Auxiliary for the state of Mississippi.

Marguerite was preceded in death by her only daughter, Dr. Corine V. Chikeka, two sisters, Gladys Williams and Genretta Larkins, and one brother, Cornelius James.

She leaves to celebrate her life, four loving and devoted sons, James Hanshaw, Larry Hanshaw, Michael (Patricia) Hanshaw, and Walter Hanshaw; one dear brother, John (Irene) James; twelve grandchildren, 16 great-grand children, many loving nieces, nephews, and a life time of friends.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 am on September 5, 2008 at Union Baptist Church.

Funeral services will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m.

Internment will be at Gabriel Cemetery in Pascagoula, MS.

Arrangements by Millender's Funeral Home, Moss Point, MS.
