Joel was the son of Mark Pinkney DeWitt and Bertha Swanger. He was born near Reger, Sullivan Co, MO. He was no doubt named after his grandfather Dr. Joel DeWitt. His middle name came from his mother's maiden name.
Joel and his wife Mary Doris Harvey had one son Joel Swanger Jr. Joel Sr. worked on the farms in Sullivan Co, and then during the WWII he worked in Kansas City and St. Louis. They returned to Meadville, in the late 1940s where they remained the rest of their lives. Joel and Doris worked for the Meadville school district until they retired in the late 1960s.
I never saw it in person and we have no color photos showing it, but everyone has told me that grandpa had red hair! Proof is found on his WWI draft registration card also.
Joel Sr. was the first in our family to enjoy model railroading. His barn in Meadville was a notable location for everyone in the region who loved playing with trains. This great tradition has continued with his son and two grandsons.
