The story of Nettie's death in Bellefonte is truly a sad one.
Nettie, the first child of Rufus and Alzona, was born in Henrietta, Clay Co, TX, in 1872. Sometime before she turned two her parents moved back to Cooper Co, MO where they lived near Alzona's parents. It was here that Nettie's two brothers were born.
Late in the fall of 1875, Rufus received word that his mother had died in a brush fire and returned to TX when Nettie was about five. By the time she was a teenager her mother had given birth to four more children.
Alzona's sister, "Hollan" and her husband, Ed Sharp, had moved to Bellefonte, AR shortly after they were married and lived on farm land that Ed owned. They persuaded Rufus and Alzona to move there in the mid 1880's.
The Sharp's oldest daughter, Mattie, was Nettie's age and was a friendly outgoing girl, and they got along fine. Nettie later met a young man whom she planned to marry. The evening before her wedding she took a candle that she had lite upstairs, and somehow a fire got started, which became uncontrollable. Nettie's father died on August 23, 1890. It's very possible that both he and her mother received fatal injuries while fighting the fire trying to save her. Her mother died the following May.
Nettie is buried in an unmarked grave beside her parents in the Sharp family plot. When her nieces returned to AR many years later to install tombstones on their grandparent's graves (Rufus & Alzona), they would have put one in place for her if they had been made aware that she was buried beside them.
