Luther was the son of Milburn Curtis Gunnels & Ethel Lorraine Dungan Gunnels.
He was married to Naomi Gunnels he was a Machinist Helper
He was Killed in action in Italy during the European Theater of Operations.
He was killed in November of 1944 he was brought home to the United States and laid to rest on December 17,1948

BODY OF LUTHER GUNNELS WILL ARRIVE THURSDAY MILITARY RITES FRIDAY

The body of S-Sgt. Luther C. Gunnels, United States Army who was killed in action in Italy on Nov 16,1944 will arrive in Galveston under Military escort at 10:am Thursday.
He was born in Rockwood Texas July 1,1920 and prior to his entrance into the armed forces was a employee of Todd Dry Docks.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Naomi Gunnels of Galveston, his father M.C.Gunnels and step-mother Eva Gunnels,of Galvestion his mother Mrs. Ethel Gunnels of Lubbock a brother Rufus A. Gunnels of San Diego Cal. and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Friday at J.Levy Bros. Funeral Home Rev. Thorton Grews of the Church of Christ, Texas City, will officate and members of Raymond A. Paul Post 880 VFW will conduct full military rites. Interment will be in Galveston Memorial Park.

REBURIAL FRIDAY FOR ISLE SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 pm Friday at J. Levy & Bros. Funeral home for Staff Sgt. Luther C. Gunnels, United States Army, who was killed in action in Italy on November 16, 1944. The body arrived here at 10:00am Thursday under military escort.
Rev.Thorton Craw of the Church of Christ in Texas City, will officiate and members of Raymond C. Paul Post No. 880, VFW, will conduct full military rites, burial will be in Galveston Memorial Park and Pallbearers will be members of the VFW Post No. 880.
