"John Toliver and Mary "Poly" Dick moved from North Carolina to Tennessee between 1810 and 1814. They were in Warren County, Tennessee in 1830 and 1837 when John Toliver and his sons-in-law bought several items at an estate settlement sale. They may have followed John Dick to Warren County for he was there in 1820. John & Mary Dick moved to Lawrence County (then Barry County) Missouri in 1839. John Toliver became a leading member of the community. He was a Democrat, respected by both pro an anti-slavery factions. John and Mary Dick raised two sets of orphaned grand children, those of their daughter Nancy, who married John Haley, and those of Mary Frances, who married William Brown."
