George E. Archer, 100, of Bloomington, died Saturday evening, August 19, 2007, at Gosport Nursing Home. He was born on April 7, 1907, in White County, Indiana, the son of William Harvey Archer 1864-1947 and Angeline Augusta (Beaner) Archer 1869-1946. Archer. He was a longtime caretaker and gardener for several families in the Bloomington area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters; Ferney, Pearl, Maude and Ruth, his brother John H., and his twin brother, John.
Private graveside interment was held at Thompson Cemetery near Royal Center, Indiana, on Wednesday, August 23, 2007. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hilltop Garden Center in care of the IU Foundation.
George lived in a decrepit trailer, drove an old pickup and worked as a yardman until he was 93. Asked how he could be so vigorous, he replied "I never married. Never had a woman boss me around." He was extremely frugal, and had amassed a nice gift of $650,000 which was donated to Indiana University's Hilltop Garden and Nature Center, in Bloomington.
