Lois K. Lavell, 94, of Rock Island, died Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Heartland Heath Care Center, Moline. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation was on Tuesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a combined parish and Daughters of Isabella rosary recited a 4:00 p.m. Memorials were made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Alleman High School or to Jordan Catholic Schools. Miss Lavell was born on August 21, 1914 in Pontiac, Ill., a daughter of Francis and Myrtle Schnurr Lavell.
The family moved to Rock Island in 1917, where she was raised and educated. She graduated from St. Joseph High School, Rock Island and was the first female cheerleader. Lois worked at the former The Rock Island Bank for 53 years. She served as a vice president and personnel manager and retired in 1985. Lois began her banking career when President Roosevelt closed the banks and she worked for the bank examiners without pay. She was the first woman teller and woman vice president at the bank.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island and its Ladies Sodality. Lois was also a member and past regent of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Circle 532 Daughters of Isabella and past president and former state treasurer of the Pilot Club.
She was a member of the Mary Little-Fort Armstrong Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Allouez Council 658 Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and former member of the Franciscan Medical Center Auxiliary.
Lois worked with a group to form the first auxiliary at the former St. Anthony's Hospital and served on its board. She was a sports enthusiast and dated Ronald Reagan while he worked at WOC Radio Davenport.
Lois enjoyed dancing and was in reviews at local theaters, as well as the Fort Armstrong Theater and was offered a stage contract.
Survivors are nephews, Timothy E., James E. and Edward "Ned" Lavell, all of Rock Island, Thomas and James Biddlecombe, both of Shelbyville, Ill. and John Biddlecombe, St. Louis; nieces, Judith Boggs, Louisville, KY and Mary Blythe of the Chicago area; many great nieces and great nephews; many great great nieces and great great nephews; and special friends, Aurilee Schenck and Diane Fox. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Edward Lavell; and sisters, Frances Lavelle and Eileen Biddlecombe.
