THE COLORADO SPRINGS EVENING TELEGRAPH

Springs Corporal, Japs' Prisoner, Is Dead in Phillippines.

June 17, 1943

"Corporal Joseph Carmack, son of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Carmack, 1524 Sheldon Ave. died Friday, June 11, in the Phillippines, according to a telegram to his parents from the war department. He previously had been reported missing.

Corporal Carmack, 22, was one of eight brothers. He enlisted in the army thru the local recruiting office on March 5, 1940, and was with the corps of engineers in the Phillippines when war was declared.

His parents received word of his interment in the Phillippines late in May, almost a year after he had been reported missing after the fall of Corregidor.

The Telegram from the war department read: The secretary of war shares both grief and extends his deep sympathy.

Word was received by the war department from the Japanese Government thru the International Red Cross".
