Death has taken one of the San Lorenzo Valley's most prominent residents Herbert Lee Hartman.

Military rites for Hartman, who was born in Boulder Creek 55 years ago and had been his native city's postmaster for 10 years, will be held Friday afternoon at 2:45 at Golden Gate national cemetery.

Hartman died Friday in San Francisco at Fort Miley hospital, where he had been ill for several months of heart trouble. Cremation was in San Francisco yesterday at Halstead and company Funeral Home.

A member of one of Boulder Creek's oldest families, Hartman was born there in 1894, the son of Daniel Hartman,. who came to the community in 1876. Herbert finished grammar school at Boulder Creek and attended high school there.

Serving in K company of the 361st infantry, 91st division in France and Belgium, Hartman distinguished himself in service during World War I. He fought on the St. Mihiel, Argonne and Flanders fronts.

He suffered several wounds in his left leg and a badly shattered left arm.

Prior to taking over the postmaster's duties in 1941, Hartman worked as a grocery clerk in the Waters Brothers store at Boulder Creek.

He took an active part in valley civic affairs, including Democratic politics, the American Legion Post 64 and the Veterans of Foreign wars Post 888. He was a charter member of the Valley Legion post. He also was a member of the Boulder Creek Fire department and the Boulder Creek Boosters.

He was one of the greatest boosters for the valley and there was little about his community, its progress and its people that he did not know. During his administration, the lobby of the post office was a friendly meeting place for both summer visitors and permanent residents of the upper valley area.

Hartman's brother, Phil, Boulder Creek fire chief and constable, is the town's oldest native son. Their father settled in the town while driving a stage between there and Santa Cruz in the last century.

Hartman's widow, Matilda, lives in Boulder Creek, and his sons, James and Robert Hartman, now reside in Modesto and Oakland, respectively. In addition to his brother, Phil, of Boulder Creek, he is survived by two other brothers, Earl of Richmond and Ray of San Jose; a sister, Mrs. Ollie Shelborn of San Jose, and a half-brother, Henry C. Yaeger of Monterey.

The U. S. army will be in charge of the full military rites which will be held at the national cemetery in San Bruno Friday.

Since his illness, and at present, the post office has been in charge of Cleo Gillette.
