Ben was the son of German immigrants Christian Friederich and Christine Seivert Obenland. He was born in Rankin, Illinois on January 16, 1885. He had four sisters, Natalie, Alicia, Katharina and Margaret. He also had three brothers, Albert, John and George.
The family lived in Vermillion, Illinois where Carl's father farmed.
On Setpember 9, 1914, Ben married Lydia Elizabeth Rebecca Natschke. The couple had three children, all boys: Carl Raymond, Melvin Christian and John Fredrick.
When Ben registered for the draft for WWI, he was farming in Sherwood, Defiance County, Ohio. He was described as being of medium height, with a medium build and brown hair and eyes.
Ben passed away on May 13, 1973. His last residence was in Sheldon, Illinois. He was buried in Sheldon Cemetery in the same town.
