Merwin Francis Almy was born in Lakewood, Ohio on July 13, 1920 and died March 12, 2010 in Portland, Oregon. the son of Arthur Cook Almy and Emma Estelle Holman Almy, Merwin descended from 11 passengers on the Mayflower: John Alden, wife Priscilla Mullins, and her parents William and Alice Mullins; Francis Cooke; Samuel Fuller; John Howland, wife Elizabeth Tilley, and her parents John and Joan Hurst Tilley; and Richard Warren. Merwin first joined the Mayflower Society in the District of Columbia in 1969 and was a member of the Virginia and Oregon Societies, having served as Governor of the Virginia Society from 1976-1979 and AG from 1976-1978 and as Treasurer and Governor of the Oregon. He served as Treasurer General of the General Society for six years from 1978-1984. Merwin was also Treasurer of the Pilgrim John Howland for many years and a member of the Huguenot Society, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Roger Williams Family Association, the Alden Kindred, and the Warren Cousins. Merwin graduated from Ohio State University in 1943 with a B.S. in Business Administration. He was a member of Theta Xi Fraternity and Beta Alpha Psi, an accounting honorary society. He married Veda Hazel Myers of Sandy Level, Virginia, on November 2, 1943 in Columbus, Ohio. During World War II he served as an officer in the Army Quartermaster Corps. He served again during the Korean Emergency with the Air Force Auditor General. He had approximately 30 years in the Reserve and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. In 1947 he accepted a job with the General Accounting Office (GAO), in Washington, DC, as an accountant/auditor. He retired in 1978, having attained the position of Assistant Director. In his over 30 year auditing career he supervised many audits of government corporations and the procurement and supply operations of the Department of Defense. He was twice assigned to the staff of the Committee on Appropriations, U.S. House of Representatives, and in 1971 served on the staff of the Commission on the Organization of the Government of the District of Columbia. One of Merwin's hobbies was genealogy, and he gathered information for genealogical publications including the Almy Family Tree and the Almy Family Newsletter. He also enjoyed photography and philately. He is survived by son Thomas Arthur, and three grandchildren. He and his wife, Veda, are buried at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
