Johan Glatter along with his wife Marie (Schneller) Glatter and their only child, John Joseph Glatter, emigrated from Thanndorf, Schlesien, Prussen, Germany on February 28, 1883. They left from the Port of Hamburg, Germany aboard the vessel Hammonia, arriving at the Port of New York, New York on March 12, 1883. The Johan Glatter family first made their home in Westphalia, Falls County, Texas. They were encouraged by Rev. Michael Heintzelmann, who was a friend of the Schneller family.
Marie (Schneller) Glatter's brother, Leopold Schneller and his wife Francisca were living in Westphalia. Leopold had arrived in the United States on January 26, 1881. Francisca Schneller is buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Westphalia, Texas. Leopold Schneller is buried at St. Martin’s Cemetery in Tours, Texas.
Maria's sister, Magdalene Schneller, was married to Wenzel Wachsmann. Wenzel and Magdalene Wachsmann sent their three oldest children, Anna, Anton and Frank Wachsmann, to live with Johan and Marie (Schneller) Glatter in Westphalia. The Wachsmann children arrived in the U.S. on September 26, 1885. Wenzel and Magdalene Wachsmann and rest of their children arrived on December 31, 1888, and they all lived for awhile in Westphalia, before moving to Tours, Texas.
