Adna Cushing was the son of Isaac and Mary (Jones) Cushing. He was born May 2, 1785 in Hingham, Massachusetts. He married January 1, 1810 to Sarah Leavitt and was the father of Sarah, Mary Ann, Leah, Adna, Isaac and Abby. Adna was appointed administrator of his father's estate. Two of the land transactions he made were to his brother Martin Cushing, in 1816 and 1820. The deeds declared that Adna was of Hingham in the county of Plymouth and state of Massachusetts.
On May 1, 1830, his nephew Benjamin Thomas Jr wrote to his brother Martin about Adna's death: Dear Uncle I send you a line, of perhaps a sorrowful countenance, that your brother
Adna died yesterday morning at 1/2 past 2 O'clock & was entombed in the family tomb at 6 o'clock on the same day. He was buried from M. & F. Burrs house. He has been unwell all winter, the work men have not been to work in the Dry Dock this winter & he went in to the shed to hammer stone & the dust gave him a bad cough, when spring opened they commenced on the dock again, & we had 3 weeks of Easterly winds & mist, by which he took a bad cold, & last week he took medicine one night, & went to work the next day, & that was the last day he labored, & 2 days before he died he was attacked very violent, & the doctors could get no phisic to operate upon him by which, he chocked & died. Yours- Benj'm Thomas Jr. NB your brother died in Charlestown & was brought to Hingham by a sail boat- Brother Thomas attended the funeral."
