CIVIL WAR VETERAN

TAYLOR, Isreal P.
Co. F, 5th Vermont Infantry
When a resident of Dorset, Vermont, he enlisted as a Private on 04 Feb 1865 and served until he was mustered out of service at Munson's Hill, Virginia on 29 Jun 1865. He was still living in Vermont when he applied for a veterans pension on 06 Mar 1889. He died on 05 Oct 1935 at the age of 90 years, 4 months and 20 days. [Military Research by Don Vatne, Civil War Historian].

Isreal can be found in the 1860 U. S. census as a 15 year old living with a farmer, Edmund Manley, in Dorset, Massachusetts. He and his wife, Emily S. Taylor, were living in Dorset, Bennington, Vermont in 1870 with their children: Nellie, 5; Ida, 3; and Byron, 1. They were living in Winchendon, Worcester, Massachusetts in 1880 with their children: Ida L, 13; George B., 11; and David F. Taylor. 9. The couple was living in Greenwich, Hampshire, Massachusetts in 1900 with no children at home. In 1920, he is listed as a widower living with his daughter Ida in Dewatto, Mason county, Washington. The last census he appears in is in Dewatto with his daughter Ida and her husband, Lee Baxter.

obituary from Shelton Independent, Shelton, WA, 10 Oct 1935, p. 6:

Dewatto Civil War Vet Passes At Home Sat. -- Funeral services for Isreal Putnam Taylor were held in the Dewatto cemetery Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Walter Givens of Bremerton officiating. Interment was beside the body of his only daughter, Mrs. Lee Baxter, who passed away a year ago.

Deceased was born in Arlington, Vermont May 3, 1845. He was aged 90 years, five months and two days. He enlisted in the ranks of the Civil War at the age of 19 under Captain Robert Pratt in company five, of the fifth regiment of Vermont.

Surviving "Daddy" Taylor, as deceased was called by his many friends, is a sister living in Vermont, a son Frank in Tennessee, grand sons George Roberts in Philadelphia, and Charles Taylor in Bremerton. A son-in-law, Lee Baxter remains in Dewatto.

Mr. Taylor was an exceptionally strong and healthy man, although he had been ailing for some time. He enjoyed life of a primitive sort and always had the roving disposition. He came west and settled on this coast over twenty years ago, where he made scores of friends who marked his passing last Saturday.
