BERNARD L. BROWN served in the Confederate Army in Company B, Hardeman's Regiment from 1862 to 1865 from Lavaca County, Texas. He received a pension for his service. After his military marker was placed in the cemetery in 1988, Spring Creek Powder Mill Chapter, UDC, conducted a Dedication of the Confederate States Army Grave Marker in his honor. There were seventy-five people in attendance.
He is established with the UNITED DAUGHTERS OF THE CONFEDERACY.
BERNARD L. BROWN married SARAH L. THRIFT on 4 Oct 1864 in Lavaca County, Texas. She is the daughter of A. DRURY THRIFT and ELIZABETH SANDERSON of Wilson County, Tennessee. It has been passed down through the Brown families that Elizabeth Sanderson was of American Indian Ancestry. Also, in the Last Will & Testament of Wade Sanderson, he did not refer to her as his daughter.

He is the great, grandson of ANTHONY BROWN, father of BERNARD BROWN, who was born about 1730, probably in Maryland and died ca 1792 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. ANTHONY BROWN is a American Revolutionary Patriot out of St. Mary's County, Maryland.
ANN RINEY descends from American Revolutionary Patriots, JOHN SHIRCLIFFE, who was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland and died 11 Nov 1782 in St. Mary's County, Maryland and from THOMAS RINEY, JR., who was born ca 1740 in St. Mary's County, Maryland and died in Washington County, Kentucky.
