Glenn "Jiggs" Davis, 80, of Vinton, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004, in St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, from complications of heart surgery. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Overton-Van Steenhuyse Funeral Home, Vinton, by Pastor Jason Sanders of Oak Grove Christian Church, rural Shellsburg. Private family burial: Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton, with military rites by Vinton American Legion George G. Luckey Post 57. There will be no visitation. Jiggs is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha; a son, David (Vianna) Davis of Gilbert, Ariz.; a daughter, Christine (Dennis) Sharp of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a stepgranddaughter; two stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ellen Davis of Omak, Wash.; an aunt, Gwen Schlotfelt of Vinton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hilbert and George Davis; and a stepgranddaughter.

Glenn Freeman Davis was born May 4, 1923, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Ray and Juanita (Conway) Davis. Jiggs, as known to family and friends, received his education in Vinton. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during World War II on the USS New Mexico in the Pacific for 3 1/2 years. On Sept. 5, 1944, Jiggs married Martha Garwood at the First Christian Church in Vinton. They have made their home in Vinton all their married life. Upon his discharge, Jiggs returned to Vinton and worked for a time with the Iowa State Conservation Commission. He spent most of his career with the United States Postal Service in Vinton working as a clerk and later a supervisor. After his retirement, he and Martha bought a motor home and spent time fishing, camping and enjoyed traveling around the United States.

Jiggs was an avid fisherman, especially fly fishing and enjoyed tying flies in his spare time. For the past two months, he had been a patient at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Jiggs was a member of the First Christian Church in Vinton, the Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association, American Legion and the VFW.

A memorial fund has been established.
