Agnes Maria Codwise was born on September 6, 1798 at the Mount Victory Plantation in St. Croix, West Indies. Her parents were James Codwise (a sugar planter) and Rebecca Rogers. She married David Burlock (son of Thomas Burlock and Margaret Layton) on December 28, 1818 in New York City, New York. David was a merchant and professor in St. Croix. He and Agnes had four children named Mary Rebecca (Mrs. Nicholas Williamson), Margaret Eliza (Mrs. James Osborne Stokes), David Codwise, and Norton A.. Agnes died on July 18, 1886 at Dr. Nicholas Williamson's home (her grandson) at 38 Bayard Street in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey.
1) Owners of the Mt. Victory Plantation were Manning Rogers, John Rogers, James Codwise, and then Agnes Maria Codwise Burlock. Manning was a nephew of John's.
2) A Nov. 29, 1797 wedding announcement that appeared in a New York City newspaper said the following:
"on Saturday evening, by the Rev. Dr. Moore, at Nicholas Cruger's, Esq., Mr. James Codwise, to Miss Rebecca Rogers, daughter of John Rogers , Esq. (of the Island of St. croix) deceased."
3) James Codwise's parents, George Codwise and Anna Maria Van Ranst, were friends of Alexander Hamilton. They named a son after him.
