At 5'11 with blue eyes, fair complexion and light hair, Robert was farming in Crab Orchard, Williamson County, Illinois when he joined Company E of the 60th Illinois US Infantry as a private on 10 Jan 1862. Mustered in on 17 Feb 1862 at Jonesboro, Union County, Illinois. Died of disease at Farmingham, Mississippi.
