Lavinia Tucker Kilgore Borroum
Birth: Nov. 18, 1809
Greenville County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Jul. 6, 1872
Alcorn County
Mississippi, USA

Married 8 Feb 1827 in Greenville, SC to Peterson Borroum (son of Beverly Borroum & Nancy Phillips Holland). They moved to Oxford in 1834.

They had nine children: their first five were born near Greenville, SC; and the last four were born in Lafayette Co., MS near Oxford.

Above dates given by their youngest child, Mrs Margaret B. Johns of Corinth, MS

Borroum family papers say that Peterson and Lavinia Borroum moved their family from South Carolina in 1834. Lavinia rode in a small carry-all with the small children.  Their plans were to join family in Texas. However, as they crossed what is now Alabama they were attacked by a waring band of Indians and left for dead. A friendly tribe of Indians from Lafayette County, Mississippi found them and took them back to their camp. The family stayed almost a year with the Indians. Lavinia was practically scalped but they saved her and reattached her scalp. After that Lavinia refused to go on to Texas. Being Irish, she thought it was an omen not to go. The family later settled in the Oxford, Mississippi area. Lavinia was gifted in languages and learned the Indian dialect easily. She would return often to the tribe to get medicine for her family and neighbors. The Indians called her "the medicine woman." Peterson Borroum died near Oxford in 1845 with Typhoid Fever. In December 1864 at the close of the Civil War, Lavinia Tucker Kilgore Borroum, with her daughter Margaret, moved to Corinth, Mississippi. Her son, Dr. Andrew Jackson Borroum, on returning from war had decided to settle in Corinth. Lavinia is buried in the Corinth City Cemetery. Peterson is buried in a private cemetery in Lafayette County with no marker. There is a memorial marker for him in the Corinth Cemetery beside the stone of Lavinia.
