Birth: Apr., 1856, Sweden
Death: Aug. 20, 1942, USA

John Jonas Alfred Kemp was born Apr 1856 in Mollie Kalmer Lar, Sweden. He died August 20th, 1942. His parents were Jon (Johann) Kempe and Gustafva (Gustava) Petersdotter. He came to the US in 1871 and settled in Nebraska. He married Ida J. Larson. They had 6 children, Minnie, Anna, Maggie, Manritz A., Rueben A., and Eva.

This is a story about John's parents

In 1832, when Johan Samuelsson was 17 years old he moved from home and worked as a farm hand in Gökhult, Smäland, Sweden. On July 12, 1841, he became a soldier, number 369, and took the "soldier name" Kämpe. He was married December 3, 1841, to Gustafva Petersdotter and the first child was born in the autumn of 1842 and was named Per August. One more child was born in the small soldier's cottage in
Årena (today the cottage does not exist) in 1845 and she was named Lena Sophia.

Johan and the family moved to another soldiers cottage in Gårdveda in 1851 and stayed there for four years. Then they moved to another house in Löfhault, Gårdveda and Johan was now both soldier and farmer.

All the children except Per August and Maria Gustafva emigrated to the United States.

During the year 1887, Johan was ill and he was lying in his bed and the winter was really tough. In a letter to his daughter, Josefina, in April 1888, he complained that he froze and could not stand on his feet and walk to the
fireplace to get warm. He feels he has not very long left to live. The letter had probably not reached Josefina before Johan died on May 27, 1888. Johan Kämpe's cause of death is listed as "unknown."

Gustafva Petersdotter lived alone in the cottage and she was quite satisfied with her life. She had one cow, five sheep with lambs, and three hens. So she got milk, eggs, mutton and wool. She told in another letter to Josefina in 1891 that she had two grandchildren, Hilma Ottilia (Per August's daughter) and Lydia Viktoria (Maria Gustafva's daughter) living in the cottage because the school is in the neighborhood.

Gustafva Petersdotter died on October 31, 1913 at the age of 96. Cause of death was listed as arteriosclerosis. She was buried November 9, 1913 in Målilla cemetery in the same grave as Johan Samuelsson Kämpe.
