Donald L. Beard, 75, of Connersville, went to be with the Lord Sunday, December 10, 2006, at his residence.
He was born April 9, 1931 in Franklin to Roy, Sr. and Rena Davis Beard. In 1950, he graduated from Connersville High School and entered the U.S. Navy in 1951. He served as a Petty Officer 3rd Class aboard the USS Valley Forge aircraft carrier for 43 months during the Korean War. His military honors and distinctions included the National Service Defense Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with four stars, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Good Conduct Medal and the Korean War Service awarded by the South Korean government on the 50th anniversary of the Korean War.
Mr. Beard joined the Connersville City Police Department on September 15, 1962, was promoted to Sergeant in April of 1970, attained the rank of Captain in January 1972 where he served until his retirement April 1, 1989. Following retirement, he was employed as an investigator for Allen Demkovich in the Fayette County Prosecutor`s office. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, AMVETS, Forty et Eight, Fraternal Order of Eagles and a 50 year member of the Moose Lodge and American Legion, all of Connersville.
Survivors include his wife, the former F. Louise Gilley, whom he married August 31, 1956 in the Central Christian Church parsonage; a daughter and son-in-law: Jenny L. and Roger Koons of Connersville; two grandchildren: Amy L. Koons of Connersville and Evan T. Koons of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, his Mother: Rena Spaulding, step-mother: Catherine Beard; step-father: Wilbur Spaulding; a sister: Nina Beard; four brothers: Roy, Jr., Robert, Dale, and Harold Beard.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville with Rev. Carol Wiley of the Alquina United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Dale Cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made at the funeral home to Reid Hospice or the F.O.P. Shop With A Cop program.
