MRS. ALBERTA BALLANCE
Alberta Beard Ballance was born the daughter of George W. & Emmaline (Woolsey) Beard Feb. 15, 1878 near Winterset, Iowa. At the age of four they moved to Humboldt, their former home. They lived in and near Stella in various locations for several years until in 1892 when with her mother and younger brother she came to make her home in Pawnee City.
She was graduated from Pawnee City high school in 1897. From 1897 to 1907 she taough in Pawnee county schools.
On Oct. 16, 1907 she was married to Francis W. Ballance. September 1918 she returned to teaching in the Pawnee City schools as Principle of the grades. In November 1923 she was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction of Pawnee county. She held this office from 1923 to 1935.
During 1935 to 1947 she was connected with the Pawnee county Welfare work.
Her husband, Francis W. Ballance died April 19, 1948. Mrs. Ballance had no family but her home was unselfishly shared with girls who wanted a home while attending high school. These girls became dear to both F.W. and Alberta Ballance and they considered them and their families as their own.
As a girl of 12 Mrs. Ballance became a member of the Christian Church of Horton, Kansas and in 1893 she transferred her membership to the Christian Church in Pawnee City.
"Berta" as she was familiarly know, loved people. She had developed a wonderful Christian spirit which made her loved and respected by all.
