Son of Dominick & Elizabeth (Tallaght) Minnihan, both born in Belmullet, Mayo, Ireland.

The parents, along with children (Michael and Winifred) immigrated to the US in 1840--Winifred said she was 3 months old when they came. Immigration records have eluded us.

In 1843 Dominick purchased 36 acres in Freemont Township, Lake County, Illinois. In 1850 the family is in Oswego, Kendall, Illinois, and finally in 1852 they settled into Shabbona, De Kalb, Illinois. In 1860 Michael is in Alto, Lee, Illinois as farm labor.

Sept 2 1862 finds him enlisting in Comp E, 105th Illinois Infantry in Shabbona, De Kalb, Illinois--he served until June 7 1865 and was discharged as a Sargent.

There are NO records of Micheal from 1865 to 1877. There are a few records of a Mike Minnihan in California, but I can't confirm it's the same person. Family lore says "he was in California, and later Alaska, hoping to make it rich with gold".

Micheal arrives in Dungeness, Clallum, Washington Territory in April 1877 at the age of 40 yrs.

He married Rachel (Henderson), widow of Joel Johnson, who had a son named Clifton, on June 20 1880 in Dungeness, Clallam, Washington. To this marriage was born...

John Francis Minnihan 1881 – 1936
Michael Edward Minnihan 1883 – 1969
Ira William Minnihan 1885 – 1967
Robert Emmet Minnihan 1887 – 1952

Michael & his family rented a farm in Clallam County, and then took up a homestead in Gettysburg (near present day Joyce, Wa) on the Lyre River in 1889. The land purchase was a gamble, because the Railroad was supposed to come through there, to transport lumber, and if the RR did come through Micheal would have owned half of Gettysburg. Sadly the RR did not come, Micheal logged all the lumber, proved up on the land,

In 1899-1901 Micheal is working, across the straight, in the Vancouver BC area, making cash money.

Michael and Rachel divorced about 1905, as she leaves to live in Fort Hadlock and stays until her death.

Micheal traveled half way across the world, was a Pioneer Citizen of Washington State, and per his grand-son's obit "enjoyed sharing his stories and pictures of local history".
