Private, Company E, 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Enlisted on September 17, 1862. Captured at St. Mary's Church, Virginia, on June 15, 1864. Held prisoner at Andersonville, Georgia for six months. Mustered out with company on June 14, 1865 at Cumberland, Maryland. Also listed as Bellar and Bellen.

Filed for a pension on January 27, 1880, application number 343,094, certificate 359,004. Disability listed as "general disability" and address listed as Millersburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania in the 1890 Veteran's Census.
