The son of Asel T. & Frances Day, in 1860, he was a farmer living in Airville, Lower Chanceford Township, York County. He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and hazel eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York March 21, 1865, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 24 as a unassigned private with the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was shot in the right hand between the 4th and 5th finger, exact date unknown, and honorably discharged with his company June 26, 1865, at New Berne, North Carolina.
In 1869, he moved to Lykens, Dauphin County, where he married Mary Elsie Jones October 4, 1871. Their children were William Elmer (b. 01/20/76), Mabel May (b. 10/31/79 - married Mervin H. Eppleman), and Robert John (b. 04/10/81). In 1893, he moved to Millersburg.
