Funeral services for Vivian E. Ganoung, age 77, of rural Plainville will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Plainville with Reverend Barbara Patterson officiating. Mrs. Ganoung passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the home of her daughter in Victoria, Kansas
She was born Vivian Ellen Shaffer on September 6, 1930 on the family farm near Waldo, Kansas the daughter of Clarence and Lola (Dunkel) Shaffer. She graduated from Russell High School in 1948. The next 3 months were spent on the family farm helping her mother. She then began working at the Home State Bank in Russell where she was an employee for the next 5 years. In 1953 she moved to Kansas City where she was employed at a bank until 1955.
She married Herman Ganoung, Jr. on May 8, 1955 in Waldo, Kansas. They had four children Craig, Rick, Robyn, and Patti.
They made their home on a farm S.E. of Plainville where she was a housewife and mother. Vivian was very involved with school and was a 4-H leader for many years and was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women and later the Rooks County Health Center Auxiliary, the Priscilla Arts Club, and the Stitch and Chatter all in Plainville. She loved to travel and even made a trip to Japan and Europe. She enjoyed baking and was known and loved for her hand baked goodies she brought to the hospital and to bake sales for her church and also baked wedding cakes for many weddings. Vivian and Herman enjoyed square dancing and were charter members of the Swing-N-Wheels Square Dance Club.
Survivors include two sons Craig Ganoung of Eagle Rock, Missouri, Rick Ganoung of Plainville, Kansas; two daughters Robyn and husband Kevin Karlin of Victoria, Kansas, Patti and husband Don Dopita of Zurich, Kansas; two sisters Agnes Sims of Headville, Kansas, and Pat and husband Lloyd Quinn of Salina, Kansas; and sister-in-law Carol Shaffer of Waldo, Kansas; 17 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and many friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband Herman, grandson Cody Ganoung, her parents, sisters Louise Booth, Wilma Johnson, Betty Funk, and Fern Shaffer; brother Charles Shaffer; 2 half brothers, Lloyd and Earl Shaffer; brothers-n-law Glenn Booth, Larry Sims, Lamar Johnson, Clyde Funk, Raymond Ganoung; and sister-in-law Kalita Kirkindoll.
Burial will be in the Plainville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 Thursday, 9-8 Friday at the Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel and from 10 - service time Saturday at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, the Rooks County Health Center Hospital Auxiliary, or to the Hays Medical Center Home Health and Hospice and may be sent in care of the Moore-Overlease Funeral Chapel, 409 S.
