Mardis A. Pierce, age 68, of Brookings, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Memorial services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, December 13, 2008, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Interment will be at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery in Bruce, South Dakota.

Mardis Ann (Dawson) Pierce was born January 8, 1940, at Flandreau, South Dakota, to Lawrence and Valeria (Stewart) Dawson. She received her education in Flandreau and moved to Brookings with her parents in 1956. On January 10, 1964, she married Donald Pierce in Brookings. Mardy worked as a nurse's aide at a nursing home in Highmore. She and Don managed the Coachman Inn in Redfield, and later returned to Brookings where Mardy was an aide at the United Retirement Center and Brookings Hospital. Don died December 16, 2006.

Survivors include a daughter, Valerie (Brad) McManus of Brookings; a son, Larry Pierce of Brookings; a daughter-in-law, Melaine Pierce, of Volga; six grandchildren: Courtney, Nick, and Austin Pierce, and Jamie, Devin, and Mason McManus; three sisters-in-law, Bonnie Pierce, Arlene Mohror, and Dorothy Loban, all of Brookings; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Wilda Haugen, and a brother, Dean Dawson.
