Leo Jacob Beem was born August 10, 1895, at Forson, Iowa to Albert and Daisy Beem. He moved with his parents to Tyndall, S. Dak., where he lived until 1915 when they moved to a farm near Bruce, S. Dak. He was united in marriage to Blanche Iske on June 9, 1918 at Estelline, S. Dak. He then served in the Armed Forces during World War I and after his discharge they moved to Wisconsin where they farmed until 1929 when they moved back to Bruce where he established an International Harvester implement business. He operated that business until retiring in 1963 and he continued to live in Brice until his death.
He passed away at the hospital in Brookings, S. Dak., on Monday evening, August 20, 1973 reaching the age of 78 years and 10 days. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bruce, The Methodist Men, The American Legion Post 200 of Bruce, served on the church board most of his life, served as Mayor of Bruce, served on the Bruce school board and served on the volunteer fire department. His interests were hobby work, reading, horticulture and fishing.
Mr. Beem is survived by his wife, Blanch, of Bruce, S. Dak.; two sons, James Beem of Grand Rapids, Minn., and Marvin Been of Atlanta, Georgia; two daughters, (Berniece) Mrs. Donald Townsend of Watertown, S. Dak., and (Maydean) Mrs. David Townsend of Bruce, S. Dak.; one brother, Murl Beem of Buffalo Lake, Minn.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Albert in infancy and one sister, Lenora.
