Mervin O. Fogelsanger, 65, 415 Franklin Heights, Shippensburg, died Tuesday, August 1, in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born April 4, 1941 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late W. Mervin and Mildred Allen Fogelsanger.
He was a 1959 graduate of Shippensburg Area Senior High School, a 1963 graduate of Shippensburg University and a 1968 graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. Mervin's career began as a fifth grade teacher in the former Mainsville Elementary School. Also while working for the school district, he assisted in the establishment of the Elementary Guidance Program and was first director of a Tutorial Program in the schools.
In 1972 he and his wife Lois purchased the Van Scyoc Funeral Home, which they operated as the Fogelsanger Funeral Home until 1987. He was associated with the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home until his retirement in 2004. For a number of years he worked for the Emergency Health Services Federation, New Cumberland.
He was a lifelong member of Messiah United Methodist Church and Sunday School and had sung in the church choir for nearly 50 years.
His professional affliliations included the Capital City Funeral Directors Association, where he was a past president, the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.
He was involved in local emergency services for over 45 years, being a life member and former president of the West End Fire and Rescue and the Cumberland Valley Home Company.
Mervin was past president of the Shippensburg Area Chamber of Commerce and the Shippensburg Rotary Club, where he was awarded the Paul Harris Service Award. He was a member of the Shippensburg Historical Society and Ft. Morris Chapter A.A.R.P. He served for several years as co-chairperson of the annual fund and on the Distinguished Alumni Awards Committee at Shippensburg University, where he was a member of the President's Club, the Century Club, and the Tower Associates. He was on the Board of Directors of the former Peoples National Bank and later of the Shippensburg Advisory Board of the former Dauphin Deposit Bank.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Lois Wadel Fogelsanger; two sons, John M. and wife Holly Fogelsanger and Andrew D. and wife Betsy Fogelsanger, both of Shippensburg; and four grandchildren, David, Drew, Stephen, and Kasandra. He was preceded in death by one son, Allen B. Fogelsanger, who died in 1968.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 5 at 10 a.m. in the Messiah United Methodist Church. The Rev. Troy T. Howell and Rev. Dr. Francis H. Norton will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg.
