Ole Sandum, 89, a longtime resident of the Chelan and Wenatchee areas, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 2002, in East Wenatchee.
He was born on May 27, 1913, to Peder and Anna (Wold) Sandum in Palermo, ND, where he was raised and educated. As a young man, he moved to Seattle where he became a journeyman ironworker in the shipyards during W.W. II. In 1942, he married Thelma Petersen; the two had grown up on adjoining farms in Palermo. Ole, Thelma and their young family moved to Chelan in 1950 upon purchasing the Chelan Concrete Company, which he operated for 17 years. In 1967, he opened the Alpenhorn Drive-In at First Creek on Lake Chelan, still a landmark to many summer visitors on the lake's south shore. Ole and Thelma retired to a small orchard in East Wenatchee in 1980, fulfilling Ole's lifelong dream of farming apples. Throughout his life, Ole's passions included steelhead fishing, square dancing, community service and his family.
Ole is survived by his four children, Gary and Barbara Sandum, Renee Lanphere, Cherie Sandum, and Scott and Sandi Sandum; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving caregivers, Jayson and Bobbi Hills of East Wenatchee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings, and the love of his life, Thelma.
Services will be held graveside at Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at 12 noon. Friends are welcome.
