I met Judy in 1987 when she was in a nursing home recovering from surgery. I was working there as a nursing assistant the summer between high school and college. She was quite the lady. We soon became friends and kept in touch for years, but eventually lost contact.
She had a lot of physical struggles in life, but she never seemed to get down. She was always smiling, positive, and busy.

Judy Mae Backa died July 23, 2006, in Helena. She was born March 20, 1947, in Great Falls to Gust and Edna Backa. She lived around the Geyser area with her family until 1954, when they moved to Billings where she attended school at the Cerebral Palsy Center at Eastern Montana College until 1958. The family returned to the Geyser area where she attended school at the Montana State River School and Hospital in Boulder until 1961. She then moved to Helena with her parents, where she attended school at Shodair, the vo-tech and the Adult Learning Center. She received her high school diploma in 1985.
She was employed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Capital Ford and Sleeping Giant Lanes. She was first runner-up in the Miss Wheelchair Montana Pageant in 1981. She wrote and published her autobiography in 1992. She was responsible for starting the Queen City Estates Housing for the mobility impaired and/or brain injured in Helena in 1995. She was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Helena.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; a twin brother, John Gust Backa; a sister, Joan; and a nephew, Greg.
Survivors include her companion of 13 years, Butch Jenison of Helena; a niece, Karen Clark and a nephew, Michael Clark of Gillette, Wyo.; a great-niece, Kristy Dahms; a great-nephew, David Dahms; an aunt and uncle, Ed and Ebba Kolar of Geyser; and numerous cousins and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, at the Liberty Baptist Church. The body will be taken to Great Falls, where friends may visit at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, at Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home, 1219 13th Street South, in Great Falls. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. in Highland Cemetery in Great Falls. Retz Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
