Marion DeKalb Whitten was born Jan 2, 1850 in Tennessee to Turner Martin Whitten (1821-1901) and Catherine E. Whitten (1824-1850, maiden name unknown). He died in Paris, Texas on Feb 12, 1923 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Paris. He was married three times and had fourteen children. He married Cynthia Alice Dodds (1852-1878) on Jan 20, 1870, and they had four children: Walter, John L, Lennie Leona, and Alice. He married Sarah Elizabeth Osteen (1862-1887) in about 1880, and they had the following children: Nauvoo Leondas, Oma Turley, Alma Rosemond, and Claude Ranier (died in infancy). He married Lillie Belle Pinson (1867-1941) on June 8, 1890 and they had six children: Mary Elizabeth, Katy Lee, Patrick D, Turner Martin, Clifton Manton and Al Brousius.
Mr. Whitten was a stone mason, maker of tombstones and it is likely he crafted many of the stones in Evergreen Cemetery and other tombstones in cemeteries in and around Lamar County, Texas.
