The son of Matthew & Sarah (Campbell) Adams, in 1860 he was a boatman living with his family in Oliver Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Perry County June 27, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 1 as a private with Co. B, 36th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 11, 1863. His obituary (seen here) misidentifies this service as being with the "Thirty-sixth regiment Pennsylvania volunteer infantry," a different, federally mustered regiment.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Philadelphia September 3, 1864, mustered into federal service that day as an unassigned private with the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry (65th Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged by general order to date May 23, 1865.

The egregiously error prone Pennsylvania Veteran Burial Card conflates him with a much older Joseph Adams who served with Co. I, 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry (80th Pennsylvania), and is buried in Ohio.

He married Elmira E. Bender ca. 1869 and fathered Margaret Jane (b. 11/28/70 - married Irvin F. Cooper), Anna Mary (b. 08/31/72), Sarah Luellen (b. 11/17/75), Cloyd Bender (b. 01/14/78), Lemuel Bender (b. 11/19/80), Olive Viola (b. 01/25/83 - married Hugh Johnson), Laura M. (b. 04/27/85 - married George Percival Bistline), Harry Shope (b. 05/20/87), Ethel Lillian (b. 01/08/90), and Winifred Helen (b. @1892 - married Earl E. Wilson). Cause of his death is listed as "organic heart disease." He had been a member of Lobaugh Post No. 207, G.A.R.
