"The most noticeable monument is that to the memory of Mrs. Gardell [sic], and was erected at a cost of about $30,000. It is totally different in style and design from any other. It is of Italian marble, elaborate and ornate, the design and workmanship by statuary artists of European celebrity."
"The Gardel family, while traveling from Jerusalem to Damascus, was attacked by the Bedouins, causing the death of Mrs. Gardel soon after arriving in Damascus. the artist's idea was a funeral procession. A figure, representing Europe, preseded by a Genius with torch and key, who deposit the cineary urn in the pyramid. Asia is represented by a female figure seated on a camel. Africa is an Egyptian female, reclining on a sphinx ... The bas relief over the door is a bas relief of Mrs. Gardel ...The uppermost figure represents America, surrounded by the emblems of the physical sciences ...
