Death: May 25, 1864

Pvt. Long was 45 when he enlisted att N.Y.C. on 8/27/1862. He was mustered in on 9/11/1862 into Co. "C" 145th N.Y. Inf.On 12/9/1863 he transferred into Co. "H" 107th N.Y. Inf.. On the afternoon of May 25, 1864, Pvt. Long's 20th corps, under Gen. Joe Hooker was ordered to take a rebel works near New Hope Church, Ga.. The confederate position was actually manned by 5,000 veterans and 16 cannon. The corps attacked in the heat and rain only to see it's front regiments ravaged by small arms and double cannister from the cannons. The engagement is continued, but soon Sherman realizes the futility of more assaults. Hundreds of good veteran fighting men were dying or dead on the field. The 107th lost 29 KIA and 133 wounded (some mortally) Pvt. Long was among those killed.
