Son of Patrick Paul Claffey and Ellen Agnes (Donnelly) Claffey
John J. Claffey, a retired telephone electrical engineer, died Saturday at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. He was 87.
John was born in West Roxbury. A 1933 graduate of Waltham High School, he also graduated from Northeastern University and the Lowell Technical Institute, where he received a degree in engineering.
John served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II, earning two Bronze Stars and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbon.
He worked as an electrical engineer for the New England Telegraph And Telephone Co. for 38 years, retiring in 1976, when he moved to Tampa.
John was a member of the New England Telephone Pioneers, the Blue Fish Cove Association in Marshfield, and the American Legion Post 139.
John was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Catherine Woods, Helen Arsenault, and brother George Claffey. He leaves his wife, Myrtle "T" (Phillips) Claffey.
