Ella was the second daughter born to Martha (Workman) McCormick in a " log house 16'x 20' " in Bear Creek Township, Logan County, Oklahoma Territory. The homestead claim being made during the First Oklahoma Land Run in July 1889 by her father John. She was preceded in 1891 by a sister Mary and brother Alex in 1892. Her other two older siblings, John Henry and Peter were born in Kansas before the family moved south.
