"Oren R. Cline, City Inspector, 39 Years, Dies at Age 101"

Oren Ramsey Cline, who moved here from Kansas for his health 51 years ago, is dead at the age of 101. Cline, the city's gas and electric inspector for 39 years until his retirement at age 93, died Thursday.

A native of Fulton County, Pa., Cline moved to Kansas as a young man. He worked as a school teacher, accountant and 18 years in the public utilities field in that state. He and his wife moved here in 1907, a year after he suffered "a breakdown in health."

Cline intended to retire, but four years later he started work for the city, which he saw grow from 7,800 people to over 300,000.

In 1953, he became the beneficiary of two of his own life insurance policies by outliving the life spans covered by insurance mortality tables in effect when he took them out.

Cline was a member of the Grace Methodist Church and the Long Beach Masonic Lodge.

He and his widow, Katie, would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary next month. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Harold Dunn, of Laguna Beach, a grandson, and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Patterson and Snively Mortuary. Burial will be in the Melrose Abbey Mauseleum.

Note: Oren Cline is erroneously recorded as "Orlando" in some early census records. He was the son of Anna Eliza and Alfred A. Cline, who was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness, May 4, 1864. His body was not returned to the family. Siblings: Lee Kerlin, Samuel Jerre and Lemuel G. (twins), Francina and Alfred A., Jr.
