BILOXI -- Lt. Col. John E. Maxwell, 86, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, in Biloxi.
Lt. Col. Maxwell was a native of Sulphur, La., and had been a longtime resident of the Gulf Coast. He was retired from the Army, having served in both World War II and Korea. He was a member of Fellowship Lodge No. 630 of Biloxi, was an honorary member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha in Biloxi, and was a supporter of the Youth Detention Center and Youth Court and the Displaced Homemakers Program. He was a former member of the Sunshine Guild at Gulf Coast Medical Center and was a Sojourner and received the Hero of 1976 honor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Washington Maxwell and Katherine Couch Maxwell; and two sisters, Virginia M. Reed and Adrienne McLanahan.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Oesterle Maxwell of Biloxi; and a son, John G. Maxwell of Gulfport.
A service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Riemann Funeral Home, Beauvoir Road in Biloxi, where friends may call from 2 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery in Gulfport.
