Husband of Perlina (Elmore) McDowell (1822-1889). Son of John McDowell. Samuel was a Veteran of the Union Army in the Civil War. He enlisted at age 50, on April 4, 1862, in Co. G, 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry. This unit then became Co. K, 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. He was enlisted as a bugler and musician. Samuel was discharged in Springfield, Missouri in December 1862 for disability. Samuel was the father of at least seven children with Perlina including: Sarah Jane, John Wesley, George Elmore, Mary Elizabeth, Samuel, Clarissa Arabella and James Lewis McDowell.
Samuel and his wife, Perlina, gave land for New Salem Cemetery in Davis City, Decatur County, Iowa in 1874, although they are buried in this cemetery. Their daughter, Sarah Jane (McDowell) Still is buried with her husband in New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. Another daughter, Mary Elizabeth (McDowell) Beavers is buried in the same cemetery as her parents.
