Deacon Crane Taken By Death.
Popular Pioneer Dies on Wednesday.
Was Well and Favorably Known in Petaluma and All Over Sonoma County.

The many friends in this vicinity will learn with regret of the death of Deacon Robert Crane. This old pioneer passed to his reward at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday night [Oct. 31] at the family residence north of town. Deacon Crane was well and favorably known in Petaluma. For many years he has been a frequent visitor here and during the agricultural fair period he was one of the directors and one of the most zealous workers in that direction. The funeral will be held probably on Friday from the Santa Rosa Baptist Church in which deceased served as deacon for 40 years. Robert Crane was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, on December 8, 1822. When but a child his parents moved into Washington County in which county he received his education, residing on a farm until he was about 17 years of age, when he with his parents moved to Marion County, Missouri, remaining there for about 9 years. He then immigrated to California, crossing the plains with ox-teams in company with 30 others. After a six months' trip he arrived at Cold Springs, El Dorado County, California, on October 13, 1849. He remained in El Dorado County about two years and a half and then moved on the place where he died, the hospitable old homestead on the Petaluma road. For over 48 years he resided continuously there. In 1856 and 1868 he served as constable of Vallejo Township, and from 1858 to 1860 he was justice of the peace. He also served his district well as a member of the board of supervisors. The deceased married in 1853 Miss Susan C. Davidson of Kentucky. By the union they had 12 children, several of whom have passed away.
