Known as Herbert, he was the oldest of three children born to Ernest Charles Kaestner and Marie Jeanne Sophie. He was born in Marylebone, St. John's Wood, London, England and came to America in the 1920's, when he changed the spelling of his last name to KASTNER. He was a POW in Germany during WWI. He was a fuel oil dealer and working for an export company. He got stuck behind enemy lines when war broke out. After the war, he moved in with his sister Ernestine and her husband, Robert Dynes, in Providence, RI.
On June 24, 1930 he married Helen Marie McCaffrey Gilroy, a widow with a young daughter, Rosemary. Herbert and Helen had two daughters: Ann Maire in 1931 (she only lived one day) and Helen Marie in 1934.
