Joseph L. Baker, 80, of Lower Burrell died Thursday (Feb. 7, 2002) in Allegheny Valley Hospital, Natrona Heights, Harrison.
Born March 14, 1921, in Arnold, he was a lifelong resident of the Valley.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a Tech 4 with Cannon Company, 103rd Infantry. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, Bronze Service Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart.
Mr. Baker was a millwright for PPG Industries, Creighton, East Deer, for 37 years before retiring in 1983.
A member of the Lower Burrell American Legion, he enjoyed woodworking, fishing and doing crossword puzzles.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Dora M. Galardy Baker; two daughters, Mrs. Donna M. (William D.) Smith of Gilpin and Joann Baker of Natrona Heights; and a grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Effie Kelly Baker; two brothers, Vinson and Samuel Baker; a sister, Garnet Schottenheimer; two stepbrothers, Thomas and Henry Baker; and a stepsister, Marella Brisack.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. Saturday until an 11 a.m. service at the RUSIEWICZ OF LOWER BURRELL FUNERAL HOME, 3124 Leechburg Road at Alder Street. Burial, with full military honors accorded by the Vandergrift Joint Veterans, will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
