While the death certificate lists his birthplace as England, the 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 census list Scotland. He arrived in the US in 1843. In about 1864 he married Martha Miller who was born in Pennsylvania; she predeceased him. They had eight children: George W, Ella J., Harry, Mattie, Rebecca, Lillie, Walter, and Alfred.
